
About the Course:
This short course introduces Western Classical Music, i.e., European art music. It opens a door to a rich universe of art through sound, which all of us unknowingly wade through every day or perhaps have hesitated to approach it for reasons that even include ‘the inability to understand it.’
In this short course, we will walk through some of the most fundamental aspects and features of western classical music. We begin with elements we hear every day, such as popular advertisement jingles and Indian film music as points of entry, but immediately thereafter we will move on to polyphony and counterpoint, instruments and orchestration, form and structure, history and evolution, performance and technology, and the final take home – the art of appreciating a piece of music. All these will be explained and demonstrated with minimal technicality, but with abundant audiovisual material and other resources.
About the Course Instructor:
Dr Anant Kamath is currently with the Inequality and Human Development Programme at the School of Social Sciences at NIAS. He is also the principal violinist of the BSM Chamber Orchestra and the Head of Department of String Ensembles at the Bangalore School of Music, besides holding a Diploma in violin performance from the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM), UK.
